Wisconsin winters do not mess around. If you own a home in Appleton or anywhere in the Fox Valley you need to get your exterior heating and safety systems checked before the snow flies. The main things to tackle are inspecting your roof and gutters sealing up attic moisture servicing the furnace winterizing plumbing and checking carbon monoxide detectors. Let me walk you through exactly what needs to be done.

I have lived through enough brutal January deep freezes to know that preparation is everything. Ignoring small issues in October usually leads to very expensive phone calls in February.

    Inspect the roof before freezing

A fall roof check is mostly about looking for missing cracked curling or blistered shingles. Exposed flashing around chimneys is a HUGE problem. Small defects turn into massive leaks when the freeze thaw cycle hits and ice starts expanding inside tiny cracks.

    Grab binoculars.

I think it is always better to look from the ground. Walking on a steep icy roof is a terrible idea and people get hurt doing it every single year. A professional should evaluate areas that cannot be safely reached from a sturdy ladder.

    Clean gutters & downspouts

Gutters should generally be cleaned out after most leaves have fallen. Appleton properties surrounded by mature trees might need it twice before the snow actually sticks. Blocked gutters contribute to roof edge deterioration and basement moisture.

During winter trapped water can freeze and add massive weight to the gutter system. That weight pulls the gutters right off the fascia board.

Make sure water dumps far away from the foundation. Pooling water right next to your house is bad news. Extensions should push that water several feet out into the yard.

    Examine fascia and soffits

Fascia and soffits connect the roof drainage system directly with your attic. Check for peeling paint swollen wood or brown stains along the edges. Soft crumbly wood means water is getting behind the paint.

Moisture damaged fascia may indicate leaking gutters or failed flashing higher up. Sometimes it means you have inadequate roof ventilation and condensation is rotting the wood from the inside out.

Repairs must address the actual source of the moisture. Replacing visibly damaged trim does not fix the real issue if water is still pouring behind the siding.

    Check attic insulation and airflow

The Department of Energy advises sealing air leaks between the living space and attic. Warm humid air from kitchens and bathrooms can easily enter a poorly sealed attic.

This causes condensation mold and wood rot. Frost on the underside of your roof decking is a clear sign that warm air is escaping into the cold attic space.

Fall checks should include whether insulation is evenly distributed. Adding insulation without preserving intake airflow can obstruct soffit vents. It is hard to accomodate extra material up there without accidentally blocking the fresh air intake. You need low intake ventilation near the eaves and high exhaust ventilation near the ridge.

    Seal drafts around windows

Air sealing helps reduce heat loss during our ridiculously cold Wisconsin winters. Inspect perimeter caulking around window frames and check the weatherstripping on operable doors.

Use exterior rated caulk for outdoor joints. Expanding foam should be used very carefully because excessive expansion can distort the frames.

I remember using way too much foam on my own garage window once. The frame bowed so much the glass almost cracked. Not my best moment. Learn from my mistakes and go easy on the spray foam.

    Service the furnace system

A furnace should be inspected and serviced before the heating season begins. Replace or clean the HVAC filter according to what the manufacturer says. A dirty filter makes the blower motor work twice as hard.

The EPA recommends annual inspection of central heating systems and flues. A professional inspection can identify combustion risks that are not apparent during a basic homeowner check.

Keep combustible materials far away from the furnace. Check that exterior intake and exhaust vents remain clear of leaves and eventually snow.

    Winterize outdoor plumbing lines

Disconnect garden hoses before sustained freezing temperatures hit the fox valley. A connected hose can trap water inside the faucet and the supply line.

This increases the risk of freeze damage. Shut off interior valves supplying exterior faucets if your house has them. Open the exterior faucets after the shutoff to let the remaining water drain out.

If you have an irrigation system it should be professionally blown out. Water left in underground pipes will freeze expand and shatter the plastic lines.

    Inspect foundation and siding

Walk around the property looking for new or widening foundation cracks. Look for stair step cracks in masonry or bulging siding panels.

Not every crack indicates structural failure. But widening cracks horizontal cracks or recurring water entry deserve prompt professional evaluation. Soil should always slope away from the foundation to encourage proper drainage.

Siding that traps wet leaves will eventually rot. Clear away any debris that is piled up against the side of your house.

    Trim dead tree branches

Heavy snow and strong winds can easily break weak limbs. Identify dead branches or limbs overhanging chimneys and driveways.

Branches rubbing against gutters will cause severe damage over a few months of winter wind. Trees leaning toward the house should be looked at by an arborist.

Small branches may be handled with a pole saw. Large limbs should be left to qualified tree professionals. NEVER attempt to cut a branch that is anywhere near an electrical line.

    Check chimneys and smoke alarms

Wood burning fireplaces should be inspected annually. The chimney cap masonry flashing and flue need to be checked for damage or creosote accumulation.

Test smoke & carbon monoxide alarms monthly. Replace the batteries unless the unit has a sealed ten year battery. Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed outside sleeping areas on every single level of the home.

Exterior furnace and dryer vents must remain clear of snow. A blocked exhaust vent can push carbon monoxide back into the house.

    Common fall maintenance questions

When should Appleton homeowners clean their gutters. The ideal time is after most leaves have fallen but before regular freezing conditions begin.

How can homeowners spot roof damage from the ground. Look for missing shingles dark moisture marks and exposed flashing. Use binoculars instead of climbing up there.

Can clogged gutters cause ice dams. They definetely contribute to roof edge drainage problems. Ice dams are usually related to heat loss uneven roof temperatures and inadequate attic air sealing.

How do you know if a foundation crack is serious. Horizontal cracks displacement or cracks accompanied by sticking doors require a professional look.

    The Bottom Line

I have spent enough winters in Wisconsin to know what happens when you ignore this stuff. The cold finds every single weak point in a house.

Many tasks like replacing furnace filters testing alarms and disconnecting garden hoses are perfectly suitable for homeowners. High exterior areas require a lot more caution.

Schedule an inspection with a reliable roofing contractor to safely evaluate the roof flashing and gutters before winter weather sets in. It is much easier to fix a small problem in October than a massive leak in January.
